What is depression?
Depression is a common mental health issue, and it is when you have a persistent low mood. It can feel like you have a dark cloud following you wherever you go making it difficult to think or feel positively about anything. It can vary in its severity, and in how you can experience it, from a feeling of numbness or emptiness to extremes of emotion.
What causes depression?
Depression can be caused by a number of different things. You may have had a series of distressing or harrowing events that you found difficult to deal with. Or it could be circumstances such as feeling isolated and lonely, feeling trapped in an unfulfilling job or relationship, or a situation you just can’t see your way out of. Depression can also be caused by certain styles of thinking. Feelings of low self-esteem can also lead to depression and/or be the result of it.
It’s not so much what has happened, but what the events mean to us and our perceived capacity to deal with them that causes someone to be triggered into a downward spiral of negative thoughts, feelings, and worry, leading to a state of depression.
Symptoms of depression
Symptoms can vary, and can include:
- Persistent low mood, sadness, or emptiness
- Loss of enjoyment or motivation for things previously enjoyed
- Feelings of hopelessness or pessimism
- Feeling tearful
- Fatigue or low energy
- Difficulty sleeping or sleeping too much
- Feeling angry or frustrated over minor things
- Low self-esteem or confidence
- Feelings of guilt, helplessness, or worthlessness
- Loss of appetite
